Sears think[box] at Case Western ReserveEsteban Salvemini, manager of the engineering and design studio at New York University Abu Dhabi, donned a welding helmet, flipped down the mask, grabbed a torch and began wielding it on a slab of aluminum: sort of.
The tool was a virtual-reality welding machine that Cleveland-based Lincoln Electric uses for training. The quality of Salvemini’s handiwork was displayed on a large video screen and scored in real time for all to see. The high-tech “machine shop” stood among a line of vendor exhibits on the second floor of the Tinkham Veale University Center, where people immersed in higher education’s emerging role in the maker movement and innovation gathered this week from all over the world.

MRI scansA new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent being tested by researchers at Case Western Reserve University not only pinpoints breast cancers at early stages but differentiates between aggressive and slow-growing types.
"Doing both will help doctors find the right treatment," said Zheng-Rong Lu, the M. Frank Rudy and Margaret Dormiter Rudy Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve and leader of the research. "There's no such technology available now that we know of."

Chemical engineering researcher teams with University of Arkansas to develop more energy-efficient fertilizer

Julie RennerJulie Renner, assistant professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, is part of a multi-institutional team lead by the University of Arkansas that’s developing more energy-efficient fertilizer.
The team received a $2.4-million award from the National Science Foundation to develop a chemical process that converts nitrogen and phosphorous from wastewater into a fertilizer called struvite.

Renner’s group will investigate ways to enhance the process through protein engineering. Proteins and peptides have emerged as a powerful way to direct the chemical process that derives solid materials from a liquid solution.

Case Western Reserve researcher wins $5.5 million federal grant to develop bioinspired materials and systems

image of spider's web in fieldWith a new $5.5 million, five-year federal grant, a Case Western Reserve University researcher is leading an international team to develop functional materials inspired by some of the most desirable substances found in nature.
The bioinspired materials produced in the project will be tested in soft-sided robots, but are expected to have a wide range of practical uses.
